Rev. R. Gerald "Jerry" Schmidt, 74, former superintendent of the Greensburg District, went to heaven Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2016.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Judy; son, Joel (Julie); daughter, Jill (Brian); grandchildren, Emma, Amelia, Luke, Dylan and Tyler; brother, Eric (Jackie); sister, Janet; as well as nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Rudolph; and his mother, Gertrude.
Jerry graduated from Asbury College and Wesley Theological Seminary. He served as a pastor at Alum Bank, Wesley UMC in Erie, and Grace UMC in Indiana before being appointed as district superintendent of the Greensburg district in 2004. He served as superintendent until 2008, when he retired, then served another eight years as pastor of Braeburn UMC.
From 1964-67, he served as a missionary in the Congo and later, from 1974-82, was program director for the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). While working for UMCOR, he traveled extensively worldwide and had the privilege of meeting Mother Theresa and the Dali Lama.
He was a loyal Pirates and Steelers fan. He enjoyed World War II aviation history, as well as flying small airplanes and gliders.
Family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Feb. 6, 2016, at Charter Oak Church
, Greensburg, where a memorial service will follow at 11 a.m.
