Mary Jane (Custer) Bishop, 85, of Mount Airy, Maryland, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2021 at home in the care of her family and with the support of the Frederick Health Hospice.
She was the devoted wife of the Reverend Franklin Bishop for nearly 63 years. They were married Feb. 8, 1958.
Born Nov. 20, 1935 at North Glade, the daughter of the late Heyward S. and Effie B. (Friend) Custer, Mary was proud of being one of 10 children on the family farm in Garrett County, Md. She loved to talk about what it was like on the farm and her job of milking the cows. Mary graduated from Southern Garrett County High School, Oakland, in 1953.
Mary faithfully supported the congregations where she and her husband served.She was a member of Circleville United Methodist Church, North Huntingdon, Pa., where Rev.
Bishop was pastor from 1991 until his retirement in 2000.
Following his retirement, they moved to Mount Airy to be near family. Mary attended Ijamsville UMC, where Rev. Bishop served as a part-time pastor.
Mary loved spending her time outdoors taking care of her flowers and garden and watching everything grow. One of her favorites was her raspberries. She always loved watching birds, especially hummingbirds.
Besides her husband, Mary is survived by three daughters, Pamela (Bishop) Sier, Janie Bishop, and Melissa Bishop-Bryant and husband Glenn Bryant; three grandchildren, Ashley Sier, Lindsay Sier and Simon Bryant; one sister, Shirley (Thomas) Bernard; and three brothers, Leo (Janet), Roger and Clarence (JoAnn) Custer.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Hubert, Melvin and Dale Custer; and two sisters, Phyllis (Custer) Knepp and Evelyn (Custer) Steyer.
A private graveside service and interment will be held at Howard Chapel UMC. Pastor Rodney Fry of Ijamsville UMC will officiate.
