Rev. Donald R. Brown, 85, of Willow Valley died Wednesday, January 15, 2014 at The Glen at Willow Valley.
Rev. Brown began his 60 years of pastoral ministry in the Erie Conference in 1954 and served churches there and in the Pittsburgh area until he was appointed as the Washington District Superintendent in 1976. After six years in the post, he moved to Holiday Park UMC and eventually retired from the Western PA Conference in 1989.
Rev. Brown graduated from Clarion University with a bachelor's degree and went on to Wesley Theological Seminary to earn a master's degree in theology. In addition to his ministry in Western PA, he was a chaplain for 8 years at Willow Valley Communities- Spring Run, and was a long- time substitute teacher for the Ephrata School District.
He served in the US Navy during WWII.
Born in Susquehanna, PA, he was the son of the late Isaac and Veda (Sumner) Brown. He was the loving husband of Hildegarde (Lockowandt) Brown with whom he shared over 63 years of marriage.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Beverly M. Hess, wife of Rev. Dr. William D. Hess II, of West Chester, PA; three grandchildren, Heather, Matthew, Dawn; and two great-grandchildren, Timothy and Ethan. Also surviving is a brother, Ronald Brown, husband of Jeanette, of OH, and a sister, Irma Anderson, wife of Jay, of MI. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Brenda Lee Brown, and brothers Ernest Brown, Blair Brown, Gerald Brown and Jay Brown.
Funeral Services were held January 21, 2014 at Charles F. Snyder, Jr. Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA with his son-in-law, Rev. Dr. William D. Hess II, officiating. Interment in Hammer Creek Mennonite Cemetery, Lititz.
