Carol Ann (Thomas) Kalp, of Gorham, ME., wife of the Rev. Larry Kalp, passed away Tuesday, September 3, 2013, at the Gorham House, after a long battle with cancer.
Carol, daughter of H. Fred and Alverta Thomas of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, grew up in Ferndale, PA. She graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and completed post-graduate studies in Maine and New Jersey. Her career in elementary education spanned 27 years, twenty of them in Randolph Township, NJ. Carol also taught in Chatham, NJ, and Bangor, ME.
A popular and gifted educator, she was honored with the State of New Jersey's first "Teacher of the Year" award presented by New Jersey Governor Thomas Keane in 1987. She also participated in a symposium for outstanding teachers in l986. With a close teacher friend, she developed a popular pre-school summer program in New Jersey called "Duck School," which ran for 14 summers.
Carol enjoyed pinochle, arts and crafts, games with her grandchildren, music, gardening, and outdoor sports. She volunteered as a flower arranger at the Flower Box at Maine Medical Center, where she also served as secretary on the Visiting Board of Children's Hospital. She was a member of the Cosmopolitan Club in Gorham and served as the Club's president in 2010-11. In July, Carol traveled to her ancestral home in Wales with her brother, Fred.
Carol was a beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt and friend. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Larry; her daughter Karen K. Berrell, (Robert) of Orono, MN, and son, Robert A. Kalp, (Laurie) of Brick, NJ; five grandchildren: Kathrine and Andrew Berrell; Sean, Sarah, and Brendan Kalp; her brother, H. Fred Thomas of Elkton, MD., and her nephew, Trey Thomas of Austin, TX.
A memorial service was scheduled for Saturday, October 26 at the First Parish Congregational Church, UCC of Gorham, 1 Church Street, Gorham. Arrangements were by the Dolby and Dorr Funeral Chapel, 76 State Street, Gorham. For online condolences, please visit www.dolbyfuneralcha pels.com
