Gumbert, Rev. Robert Clyde

Rev. Robert Clyde Gumbert died Saturday, March 23, 2013 at the home of his son in Hampton, Virginia. Mr. Gumbert was born January 5, 1929 in East McKeesport, PA to Franklin (Clyde) and Viola Gumbert and graduated from East McKeesport High School in 1946.

He served eighteen months in the US Army as a member of the GHQ band stationed in Tokyo, Japan. He received a Bachelor of Theology degree from Mount Union College and a Master of Divinity from Drew Theological Seminary. He served as a pastor briefly in the Southern New York Conference of the Methodist Church where he met and married Ellen Darrow of W. Burlington Twp, PA. They moved to the Allegheny Conference in Western PA where he spent the majority of his career serving as pastor to 20 churches. He also served as chaplain at Braddock Hospital. He retired from active ministry in 1992.

As a member of the Murrysville Area Soaring Society and the Academy of Model Aeronautics, he enjoyed building and flying radio controlled model airplanes.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ellen Gumbert; three children, Elaine and her husband Mark Legner of Graymont, IL, Clyde and his wife Nancy Gumbert of Hampton, VA, and Carol Gumbert of Waterford, MI; sisters, Evelyn Bevan and Audrey Markferding; five grandchilden; and two great-grandchildren.

Rev. Gumbert's life and service to God will be celebrated 10am, Friday, April 5 at Monroeville United Methodist Church. His family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in his memory to Monroeville United Methodist Church or the Alzheimer's Foundation.
