Harry R. Applegate, 86, of Conneaut, OH, husband of the Rev. Julie L. Applegate, died on Tuesday, May 13, 2014, at his home.
Born August 12, 1927, in Sharon, PA, to Salem H. and Catherine (Rankin) Applegate, he was a member of New Virginia United Methodist Church in Hermitage, PA, where he had served as head usher, and was under pastoral care from New Leaf United Methodist Church in Conneaut, OH.
A 1945 graduate of Sharon High School, Mr. Applegate retired after 38 years of service from the former Sawhill Tube Plant, Wheatland, PA. He also worked a second job at that time at Thomas Metals, Hermitage, PA. He served as recording secretary of Penn Star Credit Union for 15 years. Mr. Applegate had also been an assistant Boy Scout Leader serving Troup 12 of Sharon, PA, in the 1970’s.
He is survived by his wife, the Rev. Julie Lonie Applegate, a retired Western PA Conference pastor, whom he married June 5, 1965. He is also survived by two sons, Harry Richard Applegate II, and his fiancé, Jennifer Statan of Marion, OH, and Shane Donald Applegate and his wife Anna of Oil City, PA; two daughters, Nancy Miller and her husband Robin of Marion, OH, and Erin Hricik and her husband Frank of Sharon, PA; a stepson, Scott McQuiston of Conneaut, OH; four grandchildren; and a brother, Kenneth W. Applegate of Las Vegas, NV.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Janel Gail Applegate in May of 2008.
Calling hours were set for 11 a.m.to 1 p.m., Friday, May 16, 2014, at New Leaf United Methodist Church, 283 Buffalo St., Conneaut, OH, followed by a memorial service at 1 p.m. at the church with Rev. Jan Walsh officiating.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of the Western Reserve, 1166 Lake Ave., Ashtabula, OH 44004, or to the building Fund of New Leaf United Methodist Church, 283 Buffalo St., Conneaut, OH 44030. Envelopes will be available at the Church and at the Marcy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, OH 44030, which is serving the family.
