Jaime Potter Alvarez, 65, of Somerset, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, April 27, 2015, surrounded by her family and friends.
Jaime was born on November 18, 1949, in Johnstown, PA. She was called to ministry when she was a Junior in high school and was a faithful servant of God her whole life. She was ordained an elder in the Western PA Conference in 1976 and, after serving as a pastor and a chaplain, was appointed as Superintendent of the Johnstown District, among the first women to serve on the Cabinet in the Conference.
She graduated from Ferndale High School in 1967. She attended Albright College, where she was president of her sorority Chi Lambda Rho and graduated with her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1971. She then attended United Theological Seminary and graduated in 1975. She also earned her Doctor of Ministry degree from United, and received an award for effective ministry later in her career.
In her ministry she served a student appointment in West Ohio, and in Western PA was appointed to: Sidman/Saint Michael; Galloway/Nicklin; Dormont; Chaplain- Asbury Heights; Lower Burrell Bethel; and, following eight years on the Johnstown District, Baldwin Community UMC. She retired in 2014.
Jaime was the beloved wife of Ricardo “Chico” Alvarez Sr.; mother of Janna (Brendan) Dowds and Jordan (Katie) Miller, stepmother of Ricardo (Angela) Alvarez, Jr., Lynnette (James, Jr.) Lopresti, Robin(Eric) Alvarez-Plack and Brandy Alvarez; grandmother of Emma and Alyson Dowds, Jalynn and Korina Lopresti, Alexia, Kayla, Selena, and Mychael Bier, Amanda (Chad) Cooper and Logan Somosko; great–grandmother of Landon Somosko and Preston Cooper and adopted mother of Israel (Rutendo) Kamadzandu and their three daughters.
She was the sister of Lori (John) Yarnovic and Kathy (Barney) Soloman, and is survived by many nieces, nphews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Gloria (Williams) Potter, and grand-daughter Danella Bassett.
Friends were to be received 2:00-4:00 and 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 3 at Hauger-Zeigler Funeral Home in Somerset and at Grace UMC in Somerset one hour prior to the funeral service at 11 a.m., Monday, May 4. Officiants were to be Revs. Eric Raygor, the pastor, and longtime friends Aimee and Augie Twigg.
Internment was to be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
