National Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrated in September and October, recognizes the contributions and influence of Hispanic Americans to the history, culture, and achievements for the United States.
In our conference, we celebrated the San Juan UMC in Erie, Pennsylvania. San Juan UMC is a Hispanic/Latino United Methodist church located on Buffalo Road, just south of the shores of Lake Erie.
San Juan UMC is led by Pastor Israel Jonatan Estrada, a native of Honduras. He is a classically trained pianist and a graduate of Mercyhurst University with a BA in Music Performance. His spiritual roots run deep in the Honduran United Methodist Church where his grandfather and uncle were prominent ministers. His father is the music minister of Jonathan’s home church in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.
As pastor and worship leader, Jonathan begins his pathway to Licensed Ministry in the UMC. He brings a vibrancy to the San Juan worship services which are filled with music accompanied by guitars, drums, tambourines, and maracas. Most of the congregation is bilingual, however worship and Bible Study is presented in Spanish.
Pastor Jon Estrada and the San Juan members bring the voices of a Hispanic/Latinos congregation that is vital to our Erie Meadville communities in the making and engaging of disciples for the transformation of the world!
