A Prayer for the New Year 2020
At the start of each year, members of the Western Pennsylvania-East German Conference Partnership offer a Prayer for the New Year. It is available in both German and English.
The prayer is prepared in alternate years by a member of the partnership committee in Germany or in Western PA so that congregations in both areas can unite in prayer on the first Sunday of the year or another Sunday in January. It may also be used by individuals or groups as the Spirit leads.
The 2020 prayer was composed by Simon Kühlein and translated by Richard Künzel of Eastern Germany.
Both the English and German versions are included in each document below.
The East German-Western PA Partnership dates back to 1988, before the fall of the Berlin Wall. Each year since then the committee has produced an Advent Devotional,
as well as the New Year Prayer. Several people in both Conferences, including the bishops, have contributed to the devotionals. In addition, there have been many exchange visits and joint mission trips arranged through the partnership.
In October, visitors from Zwickau UMC in Eastern German spent a week at their sister church, Mt. Lebanon UMC. Three -- Markus and Sophie Reichelt and Christian Pflug -- visited the Conference Center with Mary Garber and John Esaias of Mt. Lebanon UMC. They are pictured below with WPAUMC Mission Engagement Coordinator Sandra Matoushaya, center, Garber, second from right, and the Rev. Alyce Weaver Dunn, director of connectional ministries, right.
