Camp Dean Sets Sites on New Telescopes
During the past 20 years, Rev. Dale Shunk, who serves as co-dean of an Astronomy, Rocketry and Computer camp each summer, has placed professional grade telescopes at all three of the Western PA Conference camps. He's done it "in order for our campers, young and old, to enjoy an original and personal view of God’s creation," he said.
Shunk's latest project was at Jumonville, where the camp purchased the newest edition of the Meade Telescope line called the Meade Light Switch or LS. "This telescope is much easier to use and does not require the user to know anything about the night sky to use it. It is truly user friendly and is very portable," he explained.
Because of the success of the LS 8 inch scope at Jumonville, Shunk said he has decided to upgrade the existing two telescopes at Wesley Woods and Camp Allegheny. He has received permission to sell the used telescopes to make way for new ones. His goal is to get the new ones by May, 2015.
A new Meade LS 8 inch costs $2,500 with carrying case and shipping, Shunk said. "Whatever we get from the sale will be used to purchase a new telescope for the camps," Shunk said. "Please be in prayer that we find buyers and that we can raise the additional money to complete the project."
The telescopes are listed for sale, among other places, on the Conference website in the Classifieds. Click here to see the listing.
