Most people consider retirement a time to relax and take it easy, but don’t tell Pat Galbreath of First UMC in New Castle. As a new retiree and the author of a new book for children, she’s just getting started on what could prove to be a prolific writing career. Galbreath recently published her first book, Merry Mouse in Our Father’s House, about a little mouse who wanders into a church and learns about God’s love.
The idea to write a book for children aged 3 to 8 came to her about 12 years ago, but didn’t take shape until she began writing a series of articles for kids in her church newsletter in 2008. She wrote the articles in the first person as Merry Mouse and started each one as a letter to “little disciples of Jesus.”
“I would love to be able to share the things that I’ve learned and to teach little children in a fun way,” said Galbreath. “I want children to know that God loves them and Jesus loves them no matter what.”
At a writing conference last year Galbreath met a print-on-demand publisher who put her in touch with an illustrator and the book started to become a reality.
“I felt in my heart that if I didn’t try to do this, I wouldn’t be honoring God,” she said.
The book is in memory of her second child, who died from a heart condition when he was 3-1/2 years, old and for a stillborn grandchild. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the book will be used to support ministries to children.
In addition to the book, Galbreath has put together a series of 12 articles that churches can purchase to use in their newsletter or for their children’s ministry. She’s already started work on a second book, entitled Christmas in Our Father’s House, and has many more ideas for the Merry Mouse series.
“I am so excited right now,” she said. “I don't know what God has in mind for these books, but if people like them, just think of the children that we can reach!”
