“She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.” Proverbs 31:25
A group of young United Methodist women have coordinated Unstoppable, a summer retreat to bring women from ninth grade to age 25 together to worship, serve the community, learn about important issues in our world, and to have fun! Unstoppable will be held at Grove City College from 3 p.m. on Thursday, July 10 until 1 p.m. on Sunday, July 13, 2014.
In 2012, the United Methodist Women (UMW) sent Denise, now a high school junior, and Devan, now a high school senior, to Limitless, a national women’s event, at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. While there, they learned about what UMW does to help people around the world. The UMW also provided them with new resources that would help them come back to Western PA to create their own event - Unstoppable.
In December of 2013, the Unstoppable Planning Committee had its first meeting to get this event in motion, with a mission to activate young women’s faith in service to others. Under the guidance of Diane Miller, mentor, and Barb Hess, Conference UMW President, the planning committee has expanded to include four other young women: Tamara,15, Abby, 20, Jane, 22 and Bethany, 22.
Unstoppable will be a weekend of fun, worship and music, learning and service with VIM Coordinator Rev. Stephanie Gottschalk as the chaplain for the event. Participants will take part in group activities, inspiring presentations about real issues they can do something about, and an afternoon of hands-on mission experience.
Featured speakers will include Harriet Olson, CEO of the UMW; Sharon Gregory, WPAUMC Lay Leader; and Grace Killian, mission intern with the General Board of Global Ministries, Skyping in from Israel. Workshops will include topics such as soul exploration and what it means to be a young woman today, social media and technology, mission and service opportunities, poverty (led by Pam Armstrong) and human trafficking.
Throughout the retreat, the presentations, worship and workshops will be documented with video and live social media conversation. Participate by using the hashtag #unstoppable2014 on Twitter or Facebook!
Registration for Unstoppable is open until June 27, after which no further registrations will be accepted. Interested young women should fill out the registration form in the attached brochure and sent it in with a deposit of $25 made out to UMW Unstoppable.
With each $25 registration deposit, the United Methodist Women will subsidize the total cost of $135 with a $25 grant! The remaining balance of $85 will be due upon arrival on Thursday, July 10. Opportunities to apply for scholarships will be sent to registrants following receipt of their deposit.
