Fire Destroys Sheraden Church

A four-alarm fire caused extensive damage to the Sheraden United Methodist Church in Pittsburgh on Monday afternoon, Sept. 9. With much of the roof burned away, a city inspector on the scene said the building would be condemned. The blaze, which was reported at 2:37 p.m., sent smoke and flames shooting from the roof as firefighters used aerial booms to direct water on the fire. Gottschalk Focused on Bahamas Disaster Response

Stephanie Gottschalk, former Mission/Volunteers in Mission coordinator for the Western PA Conference currently serving as executive director of the Bahamas Methodist Habitat, is coordinating plans for long-term disaster response and recovery for Methodists in the Bahamas after Hurricane Dorian caused widespread devastation there.  Rev. Bailey to Lead Susquehanna, WPA Foundations

The United Methodist Foundation of Western PA (UMFWPA) and the United Methodist Stewardship Foundation (UMSF), which serves the adjacent Susquehanna Conference, announced Aug. 30 that the Rev. Ed Bailey, executive director of the UMFWPA, will also serve as interim Executive Director for the UM Stewardship Foundation. The Rev. Dutilh Preschoolers Raise Money for Orphans in Zimbabwe: When a group of preschoolers at Dutilh United Methodist Church learned of the long distance that orphans at the Nyadire Mission’s Home of Hope were traveling to school, they agreed to hop into action. In a display of unconditional love for children they had never met, the 3- and 4-year-olds participated in a hop-a-thon titled “Hop for Hope.” They raised enough money to buy seven bicycles, worth $175 each, for the orphaned children. The WPAUMC Encounter With Christ in Latin America and the Caribbean is recruiting volunteers  to “spread the love” and grow their faith during a Volunteers in Mission (VIM) trip to Guatemala scheduled for October 31 – November 9, 2019.
