College Ministry Discernment Internships

Funded by the generous support of the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry and the Young Clergy Initiative
  • Purpose and Description
    • Interns will have opportunities to fully participate in hands on, real life ministry so that they may more fully understand the ins and outs of life in ministry. Internships will be designed to guide interns in discerning a possible call to ministry. Specifics of the experience and learning outcomes will be tailored to the intern in consultation with the host site to allow for clearer understanding of the type of ministry the intern is exploring. Possible opportunities include: teaching, preaching, worship planning, pastoral care, youth, children, administration, music, community outreach, missions and more.
      All internships will be located within the bounds of the Western PA Conference. Specific placements will be determined through the interview process, in consultation with the intern.
  • Eligibility
    • Applicants must be at least one year post-high school.
    • Applicants are not required to be United Methodist, but must be able to articulate a possible call to ministry.
    • Must have or obtain the required background checks: including Child Abuse Clearance, Criminal Record Check and an FBI clearance.

Seminary Ministry Internships

  • Purpose and Description
    • The purpose of the Summer Ministry Internships is to provide hands on, day to day, experiences of ministry in Western Pennsylvania. This will be done by giving all interns the opportunity to preach, teach and participate in church leadership activities. Additional opportunities will be offered specific to an intern’s sense of call in tandem with the host site.
  • Eligibility
    • Interns must have completed at least one term of seminary. Interns must also be at least at the stage of inquiring candidate. Applications will be considered from seminarians from any United Methodist Conference.

Board of Higher Education and Campus Ministry Internship

  • Purpose and Description
    • Our intern would have the opportunity to make presentations to churches and youth groups throughout Western Pennsylvania educating them about the scholarships available through the Board of Higher Education and Campus Ministry and how to apply for them.
      The job would involve learning the requirements and restrictions of the Scholarships offered by the Board of Higher Ed and Campus Ministry to effectively be ready to share that information with churches and youth groups in Western PA. They also would be responsible for developing new promotional materials like a brochure as well as adapting any currently available promotional materials. The intern would attend SPARK to connect with the youth, provide informational materials at a display or table, and in general be ready to talk to youth in attendance about scholarship opportunities. It is also encouraged to find other creative ways to get information out to prospective applicants. The intern would work with a supervisor and report weekly about what visits were made and general progress in promoting the scholarships.
  • Eligibility
    • Applicant must be post-high school
    • Must have a valid driver license.
    • Must have a reliable vehicle
    • Must have reliable access to internet
    • Must have reliable phone service
    • Must have or be willing to obtain Act 33/34 and FBI Clearances (The Board of Higher Ed can cover the cost of clearances)
