The Conference Discipleship Team is hosting a series of online events, Exploring the Practice of Prayer.
Join the group online for three one-hour sessions from 12-1 p.m. on Thursdays as they spend time together learning about contemplative prayer and the practice of praying with Scripture: Lectio Divina.
Christianity has a rich tradition of drawing close to God through times of prayer practice. Yet often this tradition is either unknown or poorly understood. Prayer is much more than reciting a verbal prayer or listening to a prayer read in church. Through the practice of prayer we allow the Spirit to be present to us and, over time, we increase our awareness of God’s action in our life.
In these three sessions you will learn about what it means to ‘practice’ prayer, how we can listen
more closely for God’s presence, and how we can ‘pray’ with the Bible. The sessions will include times of teaching, prayer practice, and provide an opportunity to ask questions.
Dates and topics are:
- Session 1 - Feb 24 - Exploring the Practice of Prayer: The Christian Spiritual life and the practice of prayer.
In this session we will explore the nature of the Christian Spiritual Life as a life grounded in the practice of prayer, which is a deep listening for the movement of the Spirit. How do we listen for that ’still small voice’ in our lives? What does it mean that prayer is a conversation with God where we talk but mostly listen? How can I make time for God in my life? Join us as we take time to reflect upon these questions.
- Session 2 - March 24 - Exploring the Practice of Prayer: Going Deeper - Prayer and Discernment
Jesus tells us that He comes to do the will of the One who sent Him and that we too are called to follow God’s will. But in our harried and confusing life, what does this really mean? How do I know that what I do is ‘of God’? The Christian Spiritual Tradition is rich with teachings about the practice of discernment - seeking to understand how God is leading us. This is an essential aspect of the life of prayer. Join us as we learn about the practice of discernment and how we can begin to examine our life so as to notice the Spirit’s calling.
- Session 3 - April 21 - Exploring the Practice of Prayer: Lectio Divina: Praying with Scripture
We’ve probably all done ‘Bible study’ but how do we use the Bible to pray such that we directly encounter the One who speaks to us out of Scripture? The practice of Sacred Reading (Lectio Divina) is a centuries old tradition of praying with Scripture. As we listen deeply to a passage of the Bible, we use it as a window to the Divine. Join us as we seek a word from the Word.
