Golden Sneaker Participation Programs
Golden Sneaker Award Instructions
The Golden Sneaker Award was initiated at the 2009 Annual Conference by the Health As Wholeness Team to promote healthy congregations and clergy. The award is given annually to the district that logs the most physical activity (recorded as miles walked) by participants in walking programs promoted by the Health As Wholeness team throughout the year.
All kinds of physical activity can be converted to miles. (Twenty minutes of moderate physical activity are equivalent to 1 mile) The year runs from the end of one Annual Conference through the end of the next Annual Conference. The working programs for the 2010 golden Sneaker Award were: Strides for Health (Sept. 14 - Nov. 8, 2009), Walk to Jerusalem (Jan. 10 - April 3, 2010), plus all miles walked at the 2010 Annual Conference (Wed., June 9, through Sat., June 12, at 2 p.m.)
All district superintendents, clergy and members of United Methodist churches in Western Pennsylvania are eligible to participate in the programs as they are offered. To encourage team spirit, regular attendees of the local UMCs also are encouraged to participate, whether they are members or not. Various programs are available to congregations to encourage healthy clergy and lay persons to increase and maintain their physical activity levels to meet the recommended 60 minutes of moderate exercise on most days of the week. In addition to a downloadable flyer for your use in 2010-2011 (Link to flyer) information about these programs is publicized in the InterLink, district newsletters, Conference e-news and on the Health as Wholeness, Pathways to WHoly Living web pages.

Participants keep track of their miles. Each church creates the method of tracking and collecting participant’s miles. Churches turn the total miles walked by your congregation in to the District Office no later than 1 week after the program is completed. See Report Form (click here). Please encourage your pastor to participate along with you. Be sure to record the pastor’s miles on the report form for clergy physical activity credit.

The Health as Wholeness team is open to ideas and suggestions for additional programs, including those that a local church or organization may develop on their own. Send your suggestions! Only programs which have been promoted through the Health as Wholeness Team, or submitted to the team for optional approval, will count toward mileage for the Golden Sneaker Award. Optional programs must occur during the same dates as those promoted through the team to assure fairness. The Health as Wholeness team encourages everyone to participate in physical activities as a means to promote health as wholeness on a daily basis, even when a program has ended.
