Christian Vocation Scholarships: Scholarships are available from the Conference United Methodist Woman for college or graduate students pursuing pastoral ministry or other Christian vocation. Read more.
 
Retreat for Persons with Disabilities: The 2010 retreat at Olmsted Manor for persons with disabilities will be held September 12-14.  The Revs. Alyce Weaver Dunn and Keith Dunn will lead the retreat titled Transition: Finding your Way through Change. The cost is $75 but free for  necessary caregivers. Soul-Tending: The Rev. Lisa Grant will lead a Fall Women’s Spirituality Retreat at Olmsted Manor Retreat Center from Sept. 19-21. Learn more.
 
Your Life is Your Message! That’s the theme of the Clergy Spouse Retreat, scheduled Nov. 19-20 at the Four Points by Sheraton in Cranberry Twp. Scout Event Boosts Anti-Malaria Fight: Pittsburgh District Superintendent Don Scandrol says seeing Bishop Bickerton connect with youth and their leaders the Sunday of the United Methodist worship at the national Boy Scout Jamboree was one of the highlights of his 38 years of ministry. Has Your Community Changed? Demographic reports can be eye-opening. Lovett Weems of the Lewis Center for Church Leadership writes about a recent report from the Brookings Institution. One noteworthy item: Only 21 percent of U.S. households are married couples with children under 18. That’s half the number of 40 years ago. Read more.
 
New Spiritual Formation Program for Laity, Clergy: Drew Theological School launches its spiritual formation certification program with an intensive class October 18-21. Five courses are required to receive the certification; all will be offered during a two-year cycle. This non-degree program is open to lay members, clergy and deacon candidates. Connect and Deepen Your Faith: Let members of your congregation know about opportunities to grow in discipleship on-line through the Wesley Ministry Network. Wesley Seminary has partnered with Bishop Richard Wilke’s Institute for Discipleship to offer several classes open to everyone. Fall courses begin Sept. 12. Learn more or sign up.
 
AIDS Conference: Lighten the Burden III, the third international AIDS conference sponsored by the United Methodist Global AIDS Fund committee, will be Oct. 14-16 at the Radisson Central Hotel in Dallas, Texas. Religion and Race Meeting: The Commission on Religion and Race will host a joint meeting with Black Methodists for Church Renewal (BMCR) at noon, Sept. 18 at Calvary UMC in  McKeesport. Jumonville Adventure Challenge: Jumonville will hold its First Annual Adventure Challenge on Labor Day, Sept. 6. The Challenge is a timed race involving bouldering, high challenge course, mountain biking and running. It’s open to teams of two, ages 13-17.  Adult volunteers are needed. Youth Leaders-Save the Dates! SPARK dates for 2011 have changed slightly. The great gathering for youth will be January 7,8, and 9 at the Sheraton Station Square. Eric Samuel Timm will be featured, along with the band Willet  and illusionist Jared Hall
 
Blessing of the Animals: Janes UMC in Creighton will host Paws To Give...A Tail-a-thon for Animal Protectors this Sunday, August 15 from 12:30-4:30 pm. Animal Protectors of New Kensington will have animals for adoption. There will be a blessing of the animals at the top of each hour, dog massages and dog training tips. All proceeds benefit Animal Protectors.

Perils of Aid Work in Muslim Nations: The attack that killed 10 aid workers in Afghanistan, including a United Methodist supported by the General Board of Global Ministries, prompted an NPR story detailing the perils facing faith-based organizations operating in Muslim nations. Read more.
