October 2010 --Greg Cox Named Director of Connectional Ministries
Sunday, October 03, 2010
Despite his youthful appearance, the Rev. Gregory Cox has a range of experience that should serve him well as the new Director of Connectional Ministries for our Western Pennsylvania Conference.
“Greg is youthful, enthusiastic and believes strongly in our connectional system,” said Bishop Thomas J. Bickerton. “He’s been a leader on all levels and serves on the (denomination’s) General Commission on Communications. He brings a passion for telling the story of Christ and the church in new and creative ways.”
The Bishop noted that Cox is “uniquely positioned to bridge the generational gap -- to relate to generations older and younger, as well as his own. People like Greg, who are committed to telling the story of Christ to make disciples of younger generations, are desperately needed in the life of the church.”
As the Director of Connectional Ministries, Cox is charged with aligning the resources of the Conference to its vision to ignite and sustain a passionate connection with Christ among all people – and he’s excited about the opportunity to do that. He’s also responsible to ensure that there are effective connections and networking among local, district, Conference and General Church ministries so that resources are used effectively.
Cox served as chairperson of the Conference Connectional Network until this past June, so he has a good understanding of the variety of ministries and resources available in Western Pennsylvania.
“We serve a diverse annual conference – ministry for churches in the city is very different from the rural areas. Providing relevant ministry in all these places is important and I want to be a part of all that beyond the local church.”
The Conference is also diverse politically and theologically. Cox believes he can bridge those gaps too. “My wife and I usually vote differently in elections and we have different views on some social justice issues,” he explained. “But we are living proof that despite our differences, we can love each other and live together in peace.”
A graduate of Allegheny College and Duke Divinity School, Cox is a life-long United Methodist and grew up as a member of St. Paul’s UMC in Allison Park. His wife, the Rev. Tracy Cox, is also a graduate of Duke Divinity School and serves as associate pastor at Ingomar UMC. They are the parents of three daughters: Sarah, 12; Bekah, 10, and Elisabeth, 7.
