Airport Closure Keeps Volunteer Team in Haiti

On Wednesday, Dec.8,  the headquarters of Haiti's ruling party was set afire in the capital and demonstrators took to the streets to dispute election results. See NPR story. A Volunteers in Mission Team from Western PA whose members planned to stay in Port au Prince before flying home is  instead remaining at a Methodist guest house outside the city. Team leaders Diane Miller and Jim Bickford sent this update.

Writing emails is slow going in Haiti.  Please pass this on to the circle of friends and family of team members.

All over Haiti things are shut down, including the streets of Port au Prince and the airport.  We are in the Methodist guest house, which has had no problems or violence.  We could possibly be in the safest place in Haiti.

We were supposed to be in Port au Prince tonight.  We will stay here tonight.  Hopefully we will be picked up very early tomorrow morning and taken directly to the airport in Port au Prince.

To pass the time team members are reading, playing cards, looking at the photos that have been taken and relaxing.  Another team that is staying here has a member with an international phone.  Although he is currently at his work site, we will try to make some calls tonight.

Please keep the people of Haiti and us in your prayers.
